This Is Who I Am Johannesburg journeys to a place where history and the present collide with the contradictory illusions and dreams of Hillbrow and beyond. Imbued with the power and passion of deeply personal, real-life stories, ten Hillbrow artists and participants express the truth of their lived experience through intimate photo portraits and video monologues created in response to the title.
Lives marked by abuse, alienation, disability, violence and xenophobia connect in a mosaic of hope and resistance that calls for justice and the right to a better future.
This Is Who I Am is inspired by the political and philosophical beliefs of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter and his inner circle, The Hackney Gang, which included Jeremy’s late father Mick Goldstein and the late actor and poet Henry Woolf, with whom Jeremy often collaborated. This deepens an exemplary portrait of how identity — who we are — is inseparable from trust, reliance and mutual support.
“A recalibration of time, space, experience and truth.”
— Nadia Virasamy, audience member, The Market Theatre
