Reframing Justice for Gender-Based Violence: Insights from Participatory Research with Survivors and Families

What meaningful justice looks like

The session brings together a lead researcher, a representative from a community-based organisation, a Foundation for Human Rights (FHR) programme manager, and a legal expert from Access Chapter 2 (AC2). FHR conducted participatory action research in 2025 following two rounds of household surveys to expand understanding of how survivors of gender-based violence and family members experience and define justice. The research engaged separate groups of survivors and family members to reflect on barriers to justice and on what meaningful justice.
The FHR is a non-profit organisation established in 1996, working to protect and promote human rights and the values and commitments enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution.
